Setting up Shopify Shipping: Shipping zones, DHL/DPD & shipping costs (DACH)
How to set up Shopify shipping for the DACH region: Shipping zones for DE, AT, and CH, connecting DHL and DPD, correctly setting shipping costs and free shipping thresholds – the practical guide from a Shopify Plus Partner.

TL;DR
- You set up shipping zones for DE, AT, and CH separately in Shopify – each with its own prices and delivery times.
- Three pricing models are available: flat rate, weight-based, or price-based – complemented by an optional free shipping threshold.
- You connect DHL and DPD via label apps; this saves manual typing and errors.
- Transparent shipping costs early in the funnel significantly reduce cart abandonment.
Incorrect or hidden shipping costs are one of the most common reasons for purchase cancellations – especially in the DACH region, where customers expect clear delivery times and fair prices. This guide shows you step-by-step how to properly set up shipping in Shopify: shipping zones for DE, AT, and CH, the appropriate cost models, and the integration of DHL and DPD.
01Why your shipping setup determines your conversion
Shipping is not a technical detail, but part of your purchasing decision. Anyone who is surprised by high shipping costs only at the last checkout step will abandon the purchase. Conversely, clear delivery times, a visible free shipping threshold, and familiar carriers like DHL build trust. A clean setup therefore directly contributes to your revenue – like many other levers in the checkout process, which I show in the article on conversion optimization.
02Setting up shipping zones for DE, AT & CH
Shopify groups countries into shipping zones. You can find them under Settings → Shipping and delivery. Create separate zones so you can control prices and transit times for each market:
- Germany: your main market – usually cheapest standard shipping and clear 1–3 day delivery.
- Austria: EU country, often slightly higher prices and 2–4 days transit time.
- Switzerland: Third country with customs and import tax – separate zone with its own conditions and a note on possible customs fees.
Important: Switzerland is not an EU country. Plan for customs and import VAT and communicate them openly, otherwise there will be frustration during delivery. Questions about DACH shipping? Schedule an appointment →
03Choosing the right shipping cost model
Shopify has three basic models. You can combine them per zone:
- Flat rate: a fixed amount per order (e.g., €4.90). Simple, transparent, and the best start for most shops.
- Weight-based: price based on weight – useful for heavy or bulky products. Prerequisite: maintained product weights.
- Price-based: shipping costs depend on the shopping cart value – ideal for displaying the free shipping threshold.
A free shipping threshold ("Free shipping from €50") demonstrably increases the average order value. To do this, create a price-based rate with €0 above your threshold and display it prominently in the shop.
04Connecting DHL & DPD
For everyday shipping, you want to generate labels directly from Shopify instead of typing addresses. There are two ways to do this:
- Shopify Shipping / Label Apps: via apps like the DHL Business Customer connection or multi-carrier tools (e.g., Sendcloud), you generate DHL and DPD labels, print them in batches, and automatically feed tracking numbers back into the order.
- Automatic tracking: Once the tracking number is stored, Shopify automatically sends the shipping confirmation with a tracking link – this significantly reduces "Where is my order?" inquiries.
Which solution fits depends on your volume. For a few orders, the carrier's own app is often sufficient; for several hundred shipments a month, a multi-carrier tool is worthwhile.
05Packaging, delivery times & tracking emails
Store realistic processing and delivery times per zone – rather estimate conservatively and deliver on time. Maintain product weights and packaging templates so that the price calculation is correct. And use Shopify's automatic shipping and delivery emails: They are an underestimated touchpoint that you can enhance with your branding.
06Common shipping setup errors
- Only one zone for all of Europe – this means country-specific prices are missing and Switzerland is handled incorrectly.
- No product weights maintained – weight-based rates will then calculate incorrectly.
- Shipping costs only visible at the last step – better to communicate them early on the product and cart page.
- Legal aspects forgotten: Shipping costs and delivery times must be legally compliant. How to properly integrate terms and conditions and cancellation policy is shown in the article on legally compliant checkout.
If you want to put your complete setup – shipping, taxes, and checkout – in professional hands: An overview of my Shopify services shows how I implement this for DACH shops at a fixed price.
